Most Expensive Pie
Most often people think of pies as
sweet pastries that are often a dessert after a good meal. But certain pies are
entire meals themselves, filled with meat, vegetables and other savory
ingredients.
The most expensive pie in the world
was originally created by Spencer Burge, chef at the Fence Gate Inn, in
Burnley, Lancashire. According to reports, among the ingredients were two
bottles of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild red wine costing more than $4000. In
place of the traditional steak and mushroom often found in meat pies, Burge
elected to use £553 of Wagyu Fillet of Beef (an exquisite tender, tasty beef
from Kobe, Japan) and £2,250 of Matsutake mushrooms, mushrooms so rare they
are grown under armed guard. also adding to the decadence are French Bleus
mushrooms, and winter black truffle. The top crust of the pie is then leafed
with $300 of gold, and cut into 8 slices. You can receive one slice of the most
expensive pie, accompanied by a glass of Louis Roederer Cristal Rose champagne,
worth $345 a bottle, in the place of the pint of bitter you would normally
receive with your steak and mushroom pie.
According to not only the chef but
also his customers, this delight is definitely of a higher caliber than other
expensive pies, and the taste is surely more rich and refined, but the owner of
the Fence Gate Inn recognizes that, “Not everyone’s going to order it but it’s
good for a special occasion if someone wants to be part of a real eating
experience.”
